Just very raw and amazing. Showcases something for everybody. Its a must listen. Hook Me Up has everything I look for in a followup album: It has a more consistent, firmed-up style, but it still has all the talent and best sounds of the debut. The Veronicas return with their killer vocals on a CD that's best described as a revival of new wave punctuated by the final track "Goodbye To You", a homage to the original Scandal song. Whether it's retro or just the next evolution of Australian pop, it's great to hear keyboards and electronica punching up a solid pop vocal performance, like the '80s unfolding again in a world where richer sounds are now possible.
The ballads are each a little bit different--"This Love" is more like pop, "I Don't Wanna Wait" sounds almost like a nod to Wilson Phillips in its slower sections, "Revenge Is Sweeter" is a faster song that keeps with the spirit of the CD, and "In Another Life" is just a sweet slow song that fits nicely in the next-to-last spot.

For those concerned about the parental advisory, it's only there because "This Is How It Feels" drops a single F-bomb in one verse. There's no general pattern of strong language throughout the CD so with that one exception it's nothing to worry about--but I doubt buying an edited version would mar the experience at all, so pick whichever one you prefer. I really like where the Veronicas are taking their music. More of this style in the future would be heartily welcomed. My original introduction to the Veronicas after seeing the video for 4Ever just once was the LeGauche club mix of the song, which absolutely blew me away, being an absolutely perfect modern electro pop dance mix with an 80s influence that complemented their vocals and harmonies.
So when i bought their full length CD, I was hoping for more songs of that caliber, but the majority of the album was simple, catchy commercial pop punk. Apparently, the girls or record label or both realized the power of the electronic side of their retro 80s sound, and took the music in that direction with this CD.
Simply because a drum track, for instance, is an electronic drum, doesn't mean an album doesn't rock can anyone argue that the Nine Inch Nails aren't hardcore because they use electronic drums? This album absolutely rocks, and there is plenty of guitar to be found--this is far from a synthpop CD!

Their debut, 's spectacular The Secret Life of the Veronicas , unveiled a group that was able to craft radio-ready guitar pop that was as smart as it was instantly pleasurable, first pile-driving you with hooks before the lyrics actually begin to nest in your mind, the subtle brilliance of their words appearing afterwards.
Certainly, pop-guru Max Martin had a strong hand in the girls' first disc, but the sisters were well-established well before Martin came into play, penning hits for artists as diverse as Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan and Miz, an excitable Japanese pop star. Though there is nothing inherently wrong with this, there are just some songs on Hook Me Up that either sacrifice lyrical clarity for the sake of a good hook the title track or just wind up pandering to listeners with overwrought generalities "I Don't Wanna Wait", the very T. Most of these weaker moments hit right in the dead center of the album, killing Hook Me Up 's early momentum far too soon, these weak tracks all blurring together in one dizzying haze, as if designed specifically to soundtrack the movements of cold strobelights in the middle of a sweaty club.
