Discussions are the cornerstone of my teaching style.

“Speed Dating” Teaching Strategy

We end up with the same speakers sharing their strongly held opinions while the rest of the class sits with glazed eyes. That led me to create a new discussion style: One set of students stays sitting in chairs while the other group rotates around. When the buzzer rings, they move on. There is a small amount of prep that goes into this. First, I created an overview sheet that explained the concept to my students and included a graphic organizer for them to fill out to give them some accountability.

I set up my classroom to have a circle of desks. It just made more logistical sense in my classroom.

Set up the desks and then divide your class into two groups, one that stays sitting and one that rotates. Explain the concept to your kids.

Give students various questions about to ponder and write about on a particular topic. This can be done as a journaling or warm up excercise or can be given as homework. Once each students has been given ample time to write their own answers to each question, you will start the speed dating component. Have students take their paper with their answers on it around with them.
