Gossip Cop was suspicious for a number of reasons: There had never been any indication prior to this that Williams and Gyllenhaal could be a romantic pairing, and the quotes were worded very unnaturally. Once Williamson agreed to return, WB gave him nearly free reign to do what he wanted to wrap up loose ends, including jumping the story ahead five years, killing off a major character, and allowing Joey to make her final decision between Dawson and Pacey.
