Anyway, that's a bit of it's "history. It's a keeper, for sure Geoff, Here is the twin of your deluxe. Mine was obsenely wide to me, anyway I still have the stock Kluson "Double-ringed," tuners, and LOL I notice, too No big deal, just "interesting. That's interesting you bring up the horn shape and the headstock shape.

Re: Need Help Dating a Les Paul Deluxe

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but the Deluxe model and a buttload of others were made at two different factories- both Kalimazoo and Nashville. My understanding is that the Deluxe was made from almost the beginning of the Nashville coming in, but still made in 'Kalimazzo as well at the same time. So, to me, you would think that maybe where it was made would have something to do with the 'radically' different shapes, but I have seen some models that I KNOW were Kalimazzo made with the point and big headstock, and the other way around.

If there is a way to tell where it was made looking at it, I don't know what it is. I am pretty sure the funky shape differences go all the way back to the beginning of the model, or at least some of them. Again I can't put any rhyme or reason to it.

Doesn't that make them '77? Mine was obscenely wide to me, anyway I only "know" what I was told, when I bought it I suppose so, but it seems unlikely, given the condition of the back and neck unless they drug it behind a car , originally So, if it IS, a '77, it was abused, early! It's so well blended, that the decal on the back of the headstock looks to have been put on, AFTER the refinish, instead of the refinish paint, and blending, to match what was under the decal.

I was thrilled, and amazed, at that level of detail. The refinish wasn't even that expensive, back then! The guy was an ex Gibson service, and repair person. So, he even used the exact paint formulas So, I don't know, Stein I guess, it "could" be a '77??? Or, maybe the shop, I purchased it in, replace "broken" pots, that year??? BTW, in 76, Gibson start numbering the serial numbers different. I have two 76's.

An es, and a B This is from the Gibson site: Didn't think about this, but what about the volute? If it has one, wouldn't that rule out or-newer? Since it's a refin, if it doesn't have one, it doesn't necessarily mean it's newer, since it could've been sanded away. If it has the orignal pickups, this may be a way to date it. Nothing on pickups and cavity is refinished.

I have some semi decent pot pics though.

Any insight from these? What say the crowd Pot made early Jan of After market pickups or maybe covers put on the stock ones? The Firebrand should have a branded Gibson logo, not silk screened. TheX , Jun 7, The pot stamps will tell you when the pots were made. Mine was in the control cavity too, Nov 5, ' Brians Evil Twin , Jun 7, SlapChop , Jun 7, Donovan , Apr 18, Apr 18, 5. As you indicate dating these is tricky Yours may easily fall into the serial pool By the way, never fully list your serial number as there are folks that will steal your guitars identity!

I would give the first three 's followed by X's.

Apr 18, 6. That's the problem with the old 6 digit serial numbers. There is no accurate way to date from the number.

Even though there are places, where people put in there 6 digit number and get a date that doesn't match up with the model they own. You have to look at volute, Made in USA stamp, pots, etc. Apr 18, 7. Thanks for the replies so far guys - I have added more photos to this thread to help with identification: This is the rear of the headstock. No volute, but the back has been refinished after a headstock break back in '84 Tip: NEVER let your drummer pack your guitar back in it's case with cables coiled up behind the headstock!!

The serial and the words are stamped into the wood. I believe it is a one piece neck - I cannot see any join lines through the finish although the dark finish makes it quite tricky. I also assume the wood is mahogany from the chip behind the neck below: Here is the inside of the electronics bay: The numbers that I can make out are '' and '' but the solder blobs on the pots make it rather difficult.
