When my friend Abby dared me in September to delete my dating apps for the rest of the year, I was eager to let them go. At the time, I was feeling bored and overwhelmed with dating - tired of carrying on generic conversations with strangers that often went nowhere and overwhelmed by all the potentials out there.

I wanted to take advantage of cool connections I was making in real life as I was making them, rather than hoping to run into the person again virtually. While it didn't work out with this Bumble guy, I was able to focus on how I felt around him without constantly comparing him to other people popping up on my phone. No tedious and often dead-end conversations with matches.

Online Dating vs Offline Dating

Online dating involves a lot of time and effort that can feel like wasted energy but is just part of the search. I didn't miss this at all: I wasn't spending time on conversations that fizzled or making plans that were eventually cancelled, two of my biggest pet peeves about online dating. Which is another way of saying I didn't go on many dates, period. I found myself going to parties and being more excited about connecting with potential freelancers than potential dates.

I thought finding dates in real life would be easy. In my 20s, I had plenty of random run-ins that turned into dates: But coming across singles in the wild is harder in your 30s. There were a few times I met someone at a party or bar, only to have my interest snuffed out by the flash of a wedding ring five minutes in or the mention of a girlfriend 20 minutes into a conversation. In other words, according to my friend, Internet dating is just as unpredictable as the non-digital version.

You never know how things are going to evolve until they do. These observations have been borne out in a new study by social psychologists collaborating across the country. The extensive new study published in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest sought to answer some critical questions about online dating, an increasingly popular trend that may now account for 1 out of every 5 new relationships formed: And, importantly, does it lead to more successful romantic relationships?

How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Tweet the Ways. For their page report, the authors reviewed more than studies and surveys on the subject, delving into questions such as whether scientific algorithms — including those used by sites like eHarmony, PerfectMatch and Chemistry to match people according to similarities — can really lead to better and more lasting relationships no ; whether the benefits of endless mate choices online have limits yes ; and whether communicating online by trading photos and emails before meeting in person can promote stronger connections yes, to a certain extent.

The industry has been successful, of course — and popular: Digital dating is now the second most common way that couples get together, after meeting through friends. But there are certain properties of online dating that actually work against love-seekers, the researchers found, making it no more effective than traditional dating for finding a happy relationship. One downside to Internet dating has to do with one of its defining characteristics: Online, that process is telescoped and front-loaded, packaged into a neat little digital profile, usually with an equally artificial video attached.

That leaves a less mystery and surprise when singles meet face to face. It also means that b people may unknowingly skip over potential mates for the wrong reasons. Offline, that kind of attraction would spark organically. Once potential partners meet, in other words, other characteristics take precedence over the ones they thought were important. Making things harder, many sites now depend on — and heavily market — their supposedly scientific formulas for matching you with your soul mate based on similar characteristics or personality types.
