At first, in the dark, I felt cheated — for me, half of the enjoyment of a meal is the presentation and expectation. The flavours were varied and complex, colourful and clear. My favourite was the starter and, although I enjoyed the main of definitely some mushroom, possibly some beetroot and no idea what, there were too many textures going on for my liking.
As highlighted in the review title, this is an exciting and weird experience. Of the four of us, only one was thrilled from the very beginning through to the end; the remaining three were both spooked and apprehensive. Turkish-ish food, classically-trained singers for staff, and a massively gold-leaf-and-rococo interior — as you might expect, Sarastro's usually filled with tourists enjoying the opera-box seating and interludes when the waiters burst into their best Carmen.
Oddly, Sarastro isn't the only place of its sort in the area — apparently the London appetite for opera can keep three of them alive. TWID in Battersea is a slightly cheaper option, with live opera four evenings a week and Bel Canto in Bayswater offers their singing accompanied by a French menu in slightly more traditional, somewhat less dramatic surroundings.
Inside, La Bodega Negra looks like a pretty, sun-bleached hacienda — wooden beams and floors, paint peeling on the walls, candlelight dotted everywhere — although slightly less romantic for the pounding soundtrack.

Pan out, though, and you're in the cellar of a Soho sex shop, with a street level entrance making neon promises about peep shows and hot videos.
