So you don't have to be in the same house to set it up? Bought one for my Aunt and while she has a smart phone I forgot they don't have cell service where she lives, will they still be able to set it up? We purchased and echo 2nd generation and will set it up. Can anyone help me set up for my mom in rehab? Thank you for this comment. I too am trying to set up an Echo for my vision-impaired year old mother who can't use a smartphone because she can't see to do that. My parents have internet, they have a computer, they have an iPad. What they don't have is a smart-phone because they don't need one. Since the iPad has contacts on it and it can run the Alexa app, I don't understand why you can't configure the Echo Connect using an iPad.

Hopefully, Amazon will correct this mistake in the not-too-distant future. This is very short-sighted of them to require a smartphone to configure a device which is advertised as being able to use your landline, not your cell service. I give Amazon a major fail on this one. Using this method if your mom "calls Joe" will her trac phone be charged minutes per length of her call?
Does this work if the smart phone used to set up is one that belongs to someone the nonsmartphone person would like to call using Echo Spot? I don't have a Iphone, so looks like I wont be getting this until they fix this.
I would have loved having the better sound to sleep with at night. This is simply not correct.

What in the hell did you buy an Alexa for if you don't have a smartphone? It States it needs a smart phone. Read requirements before buying. In order to set up your Echo Connect, you will need a smartphone with iOS 9. Sal some people do not need or want a smartphone but see value in what this device provides. It says right on the description that you need a smart phone to set it up. This is great to know. A land line connection device that cannot be set up with a computer nor a tablet with the Alexa app.
How dumb is that? A lot of my respect for Amazon just disintegrated.
