Anxiety can trigger emotions that are difficult to deal with. Try to stay calm yourself so that you can give them the support that they need. Listening helps your partner feel loved and accepted in any relationship and this is particularly true for people who are struggling with anxiety. Anxiety can leave people feeling ashamed and isolated, which contributes to the cycle of persistent worry that they are facing. Avoid giving them advice unless they ask you for it. Unsolicited advice can make people feel disempowered and it can also shut down the conversation. Encourage them to seek help from a professional while you focus on creating a supportive home environment.

You may feel frustrated or angry at times but it helps to realize that your feelings are directed at anxiety rather than at your partner themselves. This change in perspective makes it easier for you to join with your partner in reclaiming your relationship from the effects of anxiety. While you want to be supportive, setting boundaries is necessary if anxiety triggers insulting or critical behavior in your partner.
Addressing unjustified criticism helps your partner to be aware of this negative behavior so that they can switch to a more positive outlook on life.

Would I be able to fake it?
He thought so much into the little things that would forget to enjoy the bigger picture. As for the night I went out, he was scared for me. He trusts me as much as I trust him, so it was never a matter of that. You could imagine the horrific possibilities that were running through his head. Anxiety is about worrying about the unpredictable events of life.

So I humored him. We got dressed and walked around this quiet town for 45 minute looking for a place still seating for dinner. The only thing we found was a small ice cream shop that specialized in gourmet ice cream sandwiches. After convincing him it was okay to eat ice cream for dinner, we headed back to the room with our impromptu dinner, put on comfy clothes, watched a movie and ate them in bed.
In almost three years of dating, that takes the place of my favorite dinner.
Love is about compromise and understanding, and loving someone with anxiety taught me that.
I also have learned a few things. Do you really think this one is going to stay? Why are we even bothering with this anymore? I so badly want to form the human connection that all of my friends are able to, but my anxiety is always holding me back. Ever get to have that person who knows me better than I know myself.
I crave long night talks, laughing in the passenger seat of their car while they smile back at me, knowing I have someone looking out for me and someone to come home to. I long for watching each other succeed, building a life together, growing individually as we grow together.
